Si trova a 909 m. s. m. Secondo lo storico Pennetti prese il nome dal gentilizio Hostilius proprio del latifondista della zona. Caratteristico il centro storico con la Chiesa Madre di S. Maria Assunta risalente al 1200. L’alta collina materana, connotata dalla presenza di boschi, acque sorgive, antiche masserie, grazie al suo territorio incontaminato, offre prodotti tipici di sicura genuinità e una gastronomia dal sapore antico.
