La sede del Parco Naturale Regionale Gallipoli-Cognato Piccole dolomiti Lucane è in località Palazzo Accettura (Matera) a 7 km dallo svincolo della S. S. Basentana, dove si visiterà anche il Centro Attrezzato. Palazzo. L’Orto Botanico è ampio circa 7000 mq ed è impiantato a margine delle strutture dell’ex A. D. S. F. in località Palazzo. L’impianto è stato realizzato su un pendio, ponendo le specie secondo la loro distribuzione altimetrica sul territorio. La sala espositiva delle erbe officinali e olfattoteca è arredata con 12 espositori contenenti 36 specie vegetali. Sugli espositori sono esposti pannelli esplicativi delle singole specie e delle proprietà officinali caratteristiche. L’olfattoteca è arredata con 8 box olfattivamente isolati, contenenti altrettanti piedistalli su cui sono posti dispersori racchiudenti le essenze di altrettante specie officinali. Nella parte apicale del versante su cui si sviluppa l’orto botanico, è stato realizzato un diorama riproducente le tecniche di produzione della carbonella (attività in passato molto diffusa nel territorio attualmente protetto). Questo consiste in 3 pile che riproducono le diverse fasi di allestimento della catasta utile alla produzione del carbone.
